Sunday Mornings Are Better With Dogs

There’s something different about Sunday morning.

Maybe it’s that we don’t have to rush quite as much. Maybe it’s the extra cup of coffee. Maybe it’s staying under the covers five minutes longer.

Or maybe it’s the dog beside us who has absolutely no idea what day of the week it is—and thinks every morning should begin with breakfast, a walk, a sniff around the yard and some quality time together.

I think Free may be onto something.

Sunday doesn’t have to be about getting everything done. Sometimes it can simply be about slowing things down long enough to notice the little things.

The wagging tail.

The sunshine coming through the window.

The quiet walk.

The ridiculous dog rolling upside down in the grass when you were trying to have a perfectly dignified outing.

You know. The important stuff.

DOG PARK DISPATCH

Editor’s note: The following dog-park reports are fictional Sunday fun inspired by the wonderfully ridiculous things dogs do.

BREAKING NEWS:

Local Dog Rolls in Grass. Refuses Further Comment.

A peaceful morning walk took an unexpected turn this week when a local dog abruptly dropped to the ground, flipped onto her back and began what witnesses described as an enthusiastic full-body grass wiggle.

The dog’s human reportedly stood nearby holding the leash.

Attempts to restore order were unsuccessful.

The dog eventually returned to all four paws and continued the walk as though nothing had happened.

Witness statement:

“She looked very pleased with herself.”

COMMUNITY NEWS

Mysterious Stick Changes Ownership for Seventh Time

A stick found near the edge of the dog park has reportedly belonged to no fewer than seven dogs this week.

Each dog independently discovered the stick and immediately concluded:

“This is mine.”

Negotiations remain ongoing.

HEALTH DESK

Water, Rest and a Good Sniff

Not every healthy outing needs to be a workout.

A leisurely sniff walk gives our dogs an opportunity to explore their environment while we get outside and move alongside them.

And sometimes the best Sunday walk is simply the one where nobody is keeping track of pace.

Bring some water. Watch the temperature. Give your dog time to investigate.

And occasionally stop yourself from saying:

“Come on, Free. It’s just another blade of grass.”

Because apparently it isn’t.

Apparently, that blade of grass contains important information.

THE SUNDAY SPORTS DESK

Paws & Pavement 5K Produces Several Outstanding Performances

Dogs and their humans took to the imaginary starting line Saturday for the first annual Paws & Pavement 5K.

Some ran.

Some jogged.

Some walked.

One dog reportedly stopped at Mile 1.2 to investigate a squirrel situation.

Officials determined this was completely acceptable.

The coveted “We Finished Eventually” Award went to a human-and-dog team that crossed the finish line after several water breaks, three sniffing detours and one completely unnecessary investigation of a fire hydrant.

Race organizers called the performance:

“Perfect.”

Because getting outside and doing something healthy together was the whole point.

COMING SOON

Sunrise Sniff Walk

No stopwatch. No pace requirement. Dogs may investigate suspicious shrubbery.

Dog & Human Stretch Morning

Gentle stretching for humans. Optional participation for dogs. Lying down and observing your human also qualifies.

Paws for a Cause 5K

Walk it. Jog it. Run it. The important part is crossing that finish line together.

The Official Sunday Morning Position

Find grass.

Roll over.

Wave all four paws in the air.

Make your human wait.

Repeat as necessary.

THE SUNDAY FUNNIES

Comic Strip Audition

Apparently Free didn’t receive the memo that I was supposed to be the main character.

I’m beginning to suspect Doggone Healthy Choices has always had a four-legged creative director.

THE SUNDAY MORNING PAUSE

Before we head into another week, maybe today doesn’t need a huge goal.

Take the dog outside.

Sit together.

Stretch.

Walk around the block.

Have breakfast.

Read something you enjoy.

Laugh at something ridiculous.

And spend a little time with the creature who somehow manages to make an ordinary Sunday morning feel like an event.

That’s not wasted time.

That’s life with a dog.

There’s something wonderfully appropriate about discovering a dog-centered publication designed for exactly the kind of morning we’re talking about today: slowing down, spending time with our dogs and enjoying being part of this enormous community of people whose lives are better because dogs are in them.
