Healthy Isn’t Just What Goes in the Bowl
Healthy Isn’t Just What Goes in the BowlWhen we think about getting healthier, one of the first things we tend to think about is food. What should I eat? What should my dog eat? Am I drinking enough water? Is my dog drinking enough water? Those things absolutely matter. Nutrition and hydration are important pieces of the puzzle. But they’re only pieces. Health isn’t just about what goes in the bowl. It’s about the whole picture. And when you share your life with a dog, that picture includes both ends of the leash. What Does “Healthy” Really Look Like?Healthy choices can happen throughout the entire day—and they don’t have to be huge. Maybe you choose a more nutritious meal. Maybe you fill your water bottle before heading out the door—and make sure your dog’s water bowl is filled, too. Maybe instead of sitting for another half hour, you grab the leash and go for a walk. Maybe you stop during that walk and practice a little training. Maybe you play. Maybe you explore somewhere new. Maybe you simply sit together for a few minutes and enjoy each other’s company. Those are healthy choices, too. Because health isn’t only about nutrition. It’s also about movement, mental stimulation, emotional well-being, connection, rest, hydration, and simply enjoying life. One Healthy Choice Can Lead to AnotherThis is something I love about sharing healthy habits with our dogs: one choice can naturally lead to the next. You grab the leash because your dog needs a walk. But guess what? You’re walking, too. Your dog gets exercise. You get exercise. Your dog gets fresh air. You get fresh air. Your dog gets to sniff, explore and experience the world. You get a chance to clear your head, look around and experience it, too. Maybe that walk inspires you to drink more water when you get home. Maybe being outside improves your mood. Maybe you meet another person walking a dog and actually stop and say hello. Suddenly, something as ordinary as taking your dog for a walk has affected your physical health, your dog’s physical health, your mental well-being, your dog’s enrichment—and perhaps even your connection with another person. That’s what I mean when I talk about both ends of the leash. Your Dog Can Be Your Wellness PartnerWe often think of ourselves as being responsible for keeping our dogs healthy. And of course we are. But I think our dogs have quite a bit to teach us about healthy living, too. They remind us to move. To get outside. To stretch. To play. To explore. To notice what’s around us. To rest when we’re tired. And sometimes, simply to be present. Your dog doesn’t care whether today’s walk broke a speed record. Your dog doesn’t care whether your workout looked impressive. Your dog just knows: We’re doing this together. And sometimes that’s exactly what we need. *Don’t Forget the Water OR the Doggy Poop Bags!* Here’s one of the simplest healthy choices we can make for both ourselves and our dogs: Hydrate!!!!Keep fresh water available for your dog, and don’t forget about yourself. Bring water when you’re going on longer walks or adventures. Pay attention to weather and activity levels. And make drinking water part of your own daily routine rather than something you remember only when you’re already thirsty. It’s such a basic thing, but basic doesn’t mean unimportant. Sometimes the healthiest habits really are the simplest ones. Health Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated You don’t have to change everything today. You don’t need a perfect diet. You don’t need the perfect workout program. You don’t need to walk ten miles. And your dog doesn’t need some elaborate enrichment schedule every waking minute. Start with one healthy choice. Fill the water bowl. Fill your water bottle. Take the walk. Add five more minutes. Practice one training cue. Play for a few minutes. Try a new trail. Put the phone away and simply spend some time together or just use that app (I use the Nike Running Club App) to track your outings together, also FitBit, FitBark apps I can personally recommend! Then tomorrow?Make another healthy choice. That’s how habits grow. That’s how lifestyles change. One choice at a time. One foot at a time. One paw at a time. 🎙️ Want to Hear More?
