Have You Ever Barbecued a Knish? 🔥

Have You Ever Barbecued a Knish? 🔥

I wanted to try something different for Friday night dinner.

Mom and I were shopping when we passed some knishes.

“You want some knishes?”

We picked up a package, and I think Mom assumed we'd just heat them up in her little oven.

There was only one problem.

I really wanted to fire up the barbecue.😂

And when I say fire it up, I mean fire it up.

Can you tell I enjoy this part?

Don't worry. I'm careful! One of my childhood heroes was Smokey Bear, after all. 😂

Once the flames died down and the charcoal was hot, I started wondering:

Why couldn't we barbecue the knishes?

Mom seemed reasonably convinced that I was about to burn the heck out of dinner.

Challenge accepted.

Onto the Grill They Went

Once the coals were ready and those big flames were gone, I put the knishes on the grill.

No fancy technique. I just wanted them heated through with a crispy outside, some grill marks and that little bit of smoky charcoal flavor you can't get from an oven.

And guess what?

I didn't burn them!

They came off the grill hot, golden and lightly marked from the grate.

Meanwhile, Mom sautéed onions and mushrooms until they were beautifully browned and caramelized.

Then we piled them right on top.

Oh. My. Goodness.

The knish was crispy on the outside and soft inside, with a subtle smoky flavor from the charcoal. Add those sweet, savory caramelized onions and mushrooms on top?

That experiment was a keeper.

Mom added some mustard to hers. We sat down, ate our very unconventional Friday-night knishes, and both agreed they were GOOD.

Sometimes that's all dinner needs to be: something simple, a little experimentation and somebody to enjoy it with.

Barbecued Knishes with Caramelized Onions & Mushrooms

You'll need:

  • Knishes
  • Onion, sliced
  • Mushrooms, sliced
  • A little oil for sautéing
  • Salt and pepper, if desired
  • Mustard or your favorite condiment, optional
  • A charcoal grill

Here's what we did:

  1. Light the charcoal and let the initial flames die down until you have hot, glowing coals.
  2. While the grill is getting ready, slowly sauté the onions and mushrooms until they're soft, browned and caramelized.
  3. Put the knishes on the grill over moderate heat rather than directly over roaring flames.
  4. Turn them as needed so the outside gets warm and lightly crisp with some grill marks without burning.
  5. Make sure they're heated thoroughly, following any heating instructions or food-safety directions on the package.
  6. Take them off the grill and pile those caramelized onions and mushrooms on top.
  7. Add mustard or another favorite topping if you'd like.
  8. Sit down and enjoy your experiment. 🔥

One Important Note for Our Four-Legged Teammates 🐾

Freedom may be interested in what we're eating, but this particular topping is for the humans.

Onions are toxic to dogs, including cooked onions, so don't share the onion-and-mushroom mixture with your pup. And before sharing any part of a prepared knish, check its complete ingredient list—some knishes may already contain onion or other ingredients that aren't appropriate for dogs.

Give your teammate a separate dog-safe treat instead.

Sorry, Freedom. This one's mine. 😂

Sometimes the best ideas come from trying something different.

And apparently, sometimes that means looking at an ordinary knish and thinking:

“I wonder what would happen if I put this thing on the barbecue?”

Now I know. 🔥🐾

Want to Share With Your Dog? 🐾

Those caramelized onions are definitely for the humans — onions are toxic to dogs, even when they're cooked.

But that doesn't mean your best friend has to sit there watching you enjoy dinner!

If you'd like to share, grill an extra knish just for your dog — provided you've checked the ingredients first and everything in that particular knish is dog-safe. Keep your dog's portion plain, with no onions or seasonings, and make it an occasional treat rather than a full meal.

There's room on the grill.

Come on. Don't you know they're worth it? 🐾❤️

Until next time have a happy and healthy tail wagging day,

Try something new,

Pamela and Freedom
